Josquin des Prez & Anonymous: Ave Maria Virgo Serena a6
Judging by the witness of the extant manuscripts and printed sources from the 16th century Josquin's 4 voice setting of Ave Maria Virgo Serena must have been one of the most popular pieces of that time. However, one source from the middle of the 16th century originating in the Bavarian Ducal Chapel (BSB Mus.ms. 41) contains this piece in a version for 6 voices. That is, in addition to the 4 original voices, 2 newly composed, "si placet" parts.
